Electrification of Industrial Heating in India

White papers on electrifying heating in typical industrial plants in India

Authors: Ali Hasanbeigi, Cecilia Springer

India has set a goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2070. Achieving this target will require a major focus on the industrial sector, which is not only the largest energy-consuming sector but is also projected to become India's largest source of CO2 emissions by 2040.

The industrial sector's reliance on fossil fuels, particularly for heating, presents significant challenges for decarbonization efforts. Over 85% of the total energy used in the industry sector in India is fuels, and less than 15% is electricity. Currently, only a small fraction of the demand for industrial heating is met using renewable energy (mostly biomass). Electrification is a crucial strategy for deep decarbonization, offering substantial opportunities to reduce emissions by shifting from carbon-intensive fossil fuels to low- or zero-carbon electricity sources.

These white papers, developed by Global Efficiency Intelligence, aim to explore the potential for industrial electrification in typical facilities across different industrial subsectors in India by examining the heat consumption profiles of each typical production facility and the technologies available to meet these needs. We present the energy savings, CO2 emissions reductions, and cost impacts that electrification of heating would have in a typical facility in each of these subsectors in India under different scenarios.

You might think that the electricity grid in India is too carbon-intensive to support electrification. However, India has a plan to add 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Additionally, India has one of the most developed and vibrant corporate RE markets, allowing companies to procure RE through PPAs and other mechanisms.

With the recent advancements in corporate RE procurement in India and ongoing improvements to the grid infrastructure, it's time to seriously consider the electrification of heating as a key to decarbonizing many industries in India.
